Our Story

SonicPhonics is a learning app created by a humble group Auckland, New Zealand.
Our team is inspired by the way children learn best: through curiosity, practice, and encouragement. Our mission is to make learning to read both engaging and effective, while giving teachers and parents the right tools to support every step of the journey. From our app to our teacher dashboard, everything we design is guided by a simple idea: when learning feels natural and supported, children grow in confidence and unlock their full potential.
The creator of SonicPhonics believes that reading is the key to unlocking learning potential across all subjects. His focus is now entirely on making this vision a reality, driven by a desire to make a lasting impact on children’s education.
What is SonicPhonics?
Sonic Phonics was intentionally designed not to feel like another game. There are already plenty of phonics games available, and they tend to focus on entertainment first. Our goal has always been different — to support structured literacy by providing consistent, 1:1 style practice and repetition that would ideally be done with an adult.
In a perfect world, every child would have daily one-on-one reading practice. But teachers and teacher aides simply don’t have the time to do that with everyone, and some parents aren’t able to provide that support at home — whether due to time pressures or language barriers. SonicPhonics is designed to bridge that gap by reinforcing exactly what you’re teaching in class, aligned to your scope and sequence, rather than allowing free exploration or “game-style” progression!
Why?
Reading is a critical aspect of learning. Because of time or language ability, not every parent can practice letter sounds with their child. This will also aid teachers by better enabling them to spend more time with students 1-on-1.
How?
SonicPhonics uses AI to listen and assess children making the sounds of letters. It is then able to use that to reward children and inform parents and teachers.
Who?
SonicPhonics is currently targeting very early readers. Sounding out letters, listening and giving them personalized feedback is a skill that other technology solutions currently miss.
Where?
SonicPhonics is currently focused on New Zealand and the United States. Accents are important to voice recognition and this is where our team is based so can collect data.
Privacy
Collecting recordings of children making the letter sounds is a key part of this project. We maintain the privacy of children by doing this anonymously, no personally identifiable information is collected.
The Developers
