The Story Behind SonicPhonics: Engineering an Equitable Start for Early Literacy

When my children attended a primary school in the United States, I stepped into the role of PTA president, expecting a fairly conventional community experience. The school was nestled among neighbourhoods filled with million-dollar homes, but the reality behind closed doors was starkly different. I quickly discovered that over sixty per cent of the student body relied on free or reduced lunch programs. The community was highly transient, and many families were recent immigrants with parents working multiple gruelling shifts just to survive.

The depth of their struggle became clear through the heavy stories that emerged from our school community during my time there. One winter night, a family was forced to sleep in a local bus shelter with snow covering the ground. Another mother, who worked late evening shifts, had to park her car directly under a store’s security camera so she could keep an eye on her children while they sat in the vehicle using their devices. These parents cared deeply about their children’s future, but they simply did not have the luxury of time or housing stability to sit down every evening and work through the fundamentals of early literacy.

Spotting the Gap in Early Literacy

As a software developer, I found myself constantly wondering how I could leverage my specific skill set to fix a systemic problem. I noticed a massive, critical gap at the very introduction to education: the mastery of letter sounds. Early literacy requires an immense amount of structured repetition. The process of sounding out words, repeating those sounds, and receiving immediate feedback is the bedrock of learning to read. If a child can crack that code early on, it builds a foundation of confidence that carries them through mathematics, science, history, and every other subject they will encounter in life.

However, that essential repetition is exactly what these children were missing. The foundational practice of reading cannot happen in a vacuum; it requires a patient, guiding voice to listen, correct, and encourage. For a child sitting in the back of a car under a security camera while their parent works, that guiding voice simply was not there.

Engineering a Unique Voice Engine

The breakthrough came when I looked at everyday voice-dictation technology and wondered why we couldn’t use it to listen to children learning. However, as I began developing the technology, I quickly ran into a major roadblock: off-the-shelf speech recognition software is almost universally trained on adult voices, usually with American or British accents. It utterly failed to recognize the unique inflections, pitches, and speech patterns of young Kiwi children trying to sound out words.

To build a true foundation for young learners back home, I knew I had to train the intelligence from scratch on local data. Our team commissioned a massive data-gathering effort, partnering with local teachers and hiring collectors to record over a thousand New Zealand children making letter sounds. This collaboration resulted in a completely unique, proprietary dataset of over 33,000 hand-labeled speech samples. This hyper-local engine became the core of SonicPhonics, giving the app the rare ability to accurately listen to, understand, and guide Kiwi kids with perfect contextual relevance.

A Scientific, Complete Approach to Reading

As development progressed, I partnered with a New Zealand literacy specialist who helped me realize that mastering oral sounds alone is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Under her expert guidance, the scope of SonicPhonics expanded to encompass the full spectrum of cognitive skills required to read.

We integrated essential activities like identifying initial word sounds, segmenting (breaking words down into individual sounds), and blending (pushing sounds together to form words). To truly lock in these concepts, we also introduced structured handwriting practice.

Unlike standard digital drawing apps, the handwriting feature in SonicPhonics is purposely strict. It actively enforces both the correct letter shape and the correct stroke direction. Educators particularly value this functionality because, on traditional paper, children left to themselves can easily spend hours practicing a letter completely backwards or upside down, cementing bad muscle memory. The app stops those habits before they form. Children trace the letter correctly, creating a powerful multi-sensory loop where they see the form, write it the right way, speak the sound, and receive immediate feedback.

Bridging the Gap Between School and Home

To truly empower educators, the SonicPhonics team expanded the platform far beyond a standalone student app by building a comprehensive teacher management tool. This interface gives teachers real-time feedback, allowing them to effortlessly manage their classes and track individual student progress.

Crucially, it bridges the gap between school and home. Students can use the app during class time, and teachers can then send the app home with the students, allowing them to continue their learning on the exact same account. To ensure total alignment with daily lesson plans, teachers can select a specific scope and sequence—the exact order in which letters are introduced—to mirror their physical classroom curriculum perfectly.

Meeting a National Crisis with Real-World Impact

The urgency of this work was highlighted by a recent Ministry of Education report on New Zealand’s mandatory phonics checks. The data revealed a stark reality: less than half of five-year-olds passed the phonics tests after their first full year of schooling. Most alarming of all, children in schools facing the highest socio-economic barriers had a pass rate of just 25 percent. Educational experts emphasize that phonics ability in the first year of school is highly predictive of reading proficiency in later years, meaning these statistics represent a critical bottleneck for our children’s futures.

SonicPhonics was built precisely to answer this call. Today, our team is actively evolving the platform based on direct teacher feedback to make our evaluations even smarter. We are developing features that can actively distinguish between genuine decoding and random guessing, using those insights to dynamically expand tailored instruction to each child. Similarly, our handwriting module now becomes progressively stricter on a per-child basis as their skills improve. Crucially, these deep insights feed directly back into the teacher platform, pinpointing exactly where a teacher’s physical intervention will be most effective.

Driven by Purpose, Funded by Choice

SonicPhonics is already being actively deployed for free across more than 30 New Zealand schools. We are also collaborating closely with Resource Teachers: Learning and Behaviour (RTLBs) to ensure that neurodiverse children and those with learning disabilities—for whom structured repetition is an absolute lifeline—have full access to the platform.

People often ask how we are able to offer a tool this technologically advanced, completely free of charge. The answer is simple: I have been incredibly lucky in my career as a developer. Having worked with major companies over the years, I have done well for myself. Instead of simply moving on to the next commercial tech venture, I am choosing to take that capital and personally reinvest it into the future of our kids. I believe literacy is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

Our core mission remains equity, which is why the student app will always remain free for children and families. While we may look at premium teacher-tool subscriptions in the future as a means to sustainably fund the company’s long-term operations and continuous innovation, our focus remains exactly where it started: ensuring that no matter their background, every single child gets the fair shot, the confidence, and the strong foundation they deserve to change the trajectory of their education.
